How to Make a Spelling Test

Spelling words in Context

Did you know that students make connections in their brains as they learn? This helps them to remember information efficiently. This is why it is important for students to be given information in context. This works for introducing new concepts in all subject areas, including spelling.

Here's what I learnt about giving spelling tests: If I give my students a spelling quiz by just calling out the words for them to spell, they can make a lot of errors.  These errors may be due to them not hearing me well so they may write 'hour' instead of 'flour' or they may mix up their homophones and write 'flower' instead of 'flour'. Has this ever happened to you? ...(even though you gave them a spelling list and did drills with them) ...[sigh]

Students connect the sound of a word to its meaning, to its written form (spelling) and to its real image (a picture or memory). Sometimes we may ask them to spell a homophone word without realizing that they may be spelling the other homophone of the word you really mean. So, as much as possible, you can show your students what you want them to spell by:

spelling tests

Using images. This is great for spelling words that are tangible nouns which can be represented by a picture.

spelling tests

Using images and clues. I use these for words that are longer or difficult. In this example, I showed the consonants and students completed each word by putting in the vowels.

spelling tests

Putting the word in context within a sentence.

spelling tests

Simply by underlining the misspelled word in a sentence and writing the correct spelling.

Simple Machines Science Unit Plan

Simple Machines Lesson Plans
Science is my favorite subject to teach! Why? It's so hands-on! When I'm teaching my Simple Machines unit, my students enjoy making levers, turning the gears and lifting things using a makeshift pulley. I use co-operative learning in the exploration, explanation, and extension phases of the 5E learning cycle, which I use in all of my science lesson plans. As a bonus to these simple machines lesson plans, I created a mini quiz about gears that's a free download which can be used along with my Simple Machines Unit Plan. To read more about each lesson in the unit, you can download a free preview from TpT (just click on the orange download preview button). All five lessons are available for purchase at TpT and Teachers Notebook.

Father's Day Greetings for the Male Teachers!

Father's Day School Craft Tie

Yes, it's Father's Day! Many classes were doing Father's Day themed art and craft at my school on Friday. We had a great time making ties and shirt cards. I want to wish all male teachers everywhere a Happy Father's Day today because they are father figures for their students and it means so much to students (whether they know it or not) to have a positive male presence in their lives.

About Me

My photo
As a Caribbean primary school teacher, I share my unique classroom with the world through this blog. Readers step into my class through the pictures, articles and classroom samples of games and lessons used in my class. I have been teaching since 2005 at the std. 4 primary level in Trinidad and Tobago. I am particularly interested in sharing my own personal lesson plans, tests and activities. Teachers need to share ideas and support each other because in doing so, we help to educate our students and develop ourselves as teachers. Technology is ever evolving and we as teachers should get on board with it, collaborate and keep up to date with this new age that we live in. Our students belong to this technological era and we must embrace opportunities to learn from each other in this global community. I also love to express my creativity in the classroom. I am a bit of a craftster . So I'm always cutting, gluing or making something... a game, a chart, a learning center, etc. So, teachers and parents, feel free to stop by and see what's new at Nyla's Crafty Teaching!
